I am Peter Barrett,

I have been painting things that I love and inspire me for more than 30 years. I love being on the water and seeing the beauty and power of the sea. 

My paintings represent what I see in colors and movement. Painting a wave requires study of the water’s motion, how it breaks, what areas are translucent and making the shape realistic as it curls or breaks against rocks or moves up a beach. 

There is a lot of geometry that goes into the composition. It requires being there and studying the movement before putting paint on a canvas. The same for creating a scene with boats. The geometry is critical. 

I have been around and on the water my entire life, graduated from the Coast Guard Academy and served aboard ship. I’m an avid boater and snap photos of waves, boats and shore birds whenever I can and use these as reference in my studio work. Being on the water gives a different perspective and I hope it is seen in my art.
